Welcome to Lake School
| | Dear Parents: Welcome to Lake School. I hope that you and your children will have a great educational experience in the 2007/2008 school year. The staff is working very hard to prepare their classrooms for the new year and I anticipate that once again we will have a great opening. If you are new to Lake School I encourage you to stop by my office and introduce yourself. Please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions or if there is anything I can do to help with any concern you may have.
As returning parents know, I am a retired administrator, and work at Lake on a part-time contract. I also serve as a part-time Superintendent at Plaza. I am available at Lake on Tuesdays and Fridays and you can reach me at Plaza if needed on Wednesday and Thursdays. Cheri Pruett always has my calendar so you can check with her if you wish to make an appointment to see me.
We have a change this year to our teaching staff, Justin Combs moved back to Tennessee and our new 7th and 8th grade teacher is Mrs. Helena Dillon.
One of our goals this year is to start making major improvements to our playground. The Lake School Community Club is working with the Lake Board of Trustees on this project. If you are intersted in becoming a member of the Community Club I suggest you talk with our Principal, Beverlee Seale. She can put you in touch with the club officers.
We will be continuing to expand our Accelerated Reader library and we also will continue to use Accelerated Math in grades three through eight. Both of these programs have proven to be very popular additions to our curriculum. I recommend that when you meet with your child's teacher you ask about these programs and how they compliment the regular curriculum.
Our textbooks are selected from the State's approved list for each subject area. We are required to buy the most current adoption. The state is on a six year cycle with a different subject area being adopted each year. This year the students will be working with new science materials.
Lake Elementary has adopted the new wellness program required by law. This means we will not sell food or drink to students during school hours that are not on the approved list. Basically, this means we are trying to limit the sugar intake of our students. Parents should be aware that this applies only to food sold on campus. Room mothers may still bring birthday treats or food for other events. I would encourage you to think of items that are nutritious and have lower sugar content when you do so. Check with the teachers about specifics of the program.
We have a great learning environment for the students and parent involvement is an important part of the system. I encourage all of you to play an active role in your child's education. Check with the teachers to see how you can volunteer to help. I love to see volunteers on campus because I know that with their help we are able to offer more help to our students.
