As parents wrestle with the options available to them for schooling this year, I want you to also know that the state is providing a waiver application to attend in-person learning. This waiver is intended for K-8 schools only and could allow in-person instruction even if the county is on the state monitoring list. Approval of the waiver is dependent on the local county health department.
Lake Elementary has submitted its request for the waiver to Glenn County Public Health. The actual waiver itself is being developed at the California Department of Public Health and is expected to be shared during the week of July 27, 2020. Once the waiver is made public, we will submit it on behalf of Lake Elementary School. Should the waiver get approved, we will implement the required safety protocols to resume in-person learning.
What this means for Options 1 and 2: For families choosing Option 1 that was previously described in an email and on this news page, we would resume with in-person learning as soon as we could. For families choosing Option 2, in-person learning would not resume for students until the start of Trimester 2.
This may help add clarity to your decision-making. However, please understand, in conversations with our local health department, it is unlikely they will grant a waiver as long as Glenn County is on the monitoring list. In the meantime, Lake Elementary is working closely with other agencies to advocate for in-person learning. I continue to take comfort that we weren't planning to return to school until September 2, as a lot can change between now and then.
